American Indian Strength & Health
Historical Physical Characteristics:
The Plains Indians were the tallest people on earth (Ohio State University study) at one time. My tribe The southeasters Choctaws were not far behind. The Great Choctaw Chief Tushka-Lusa was a towering man, built like an NFL linebacker.
Dietary fat and protein must be adequate to reach full height. The Buffalo is the perfect food for reaching maximum height. At this time Indian Tribes were almost completely free of "White Man's disease" (AKA "Disease of Civilization") There were no such disease as Cancer , Heart Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Diabetes. They experience a longer lifespan than the local Whites of that era excluding premature violent death as a factor for both groups. This changed when flour and sugar was introduced into the Indians diet. The change was dramatic and the Indians of today still suffer from that introduction.
The American Indian was built for strength and speed. Sprinting speed was more important than endurance, however they excelled at both. This was important in chasing down wild game. Burst strength (explosive) was more important than endurance. Later the Choctaws would acquire the horse. The Choctaw pony breed is still alive today. The Choctaws had the horse long before the Plains Indians who have been romantically linked in history to the horse.
Division of Labor: Men
There was a very define historical division of labor for men and women. The men's responsibility was hunting wild game. At the beginning of everyday, the men would go hunting to provide their village members with fresh lean meat. Their main responsibility was defense of the village, conducting raiding parties and tool making. The men could not be occupied by simple chores because they would be out of position the do battle should another tribe attack the village.
Division of Labor: Women:
The women main job were setting up the camp site. They also picked fresh fruits, berries and other vegetable to complete the meal. They prepared the food and were in charge of household management. They looked after the young children and cared for the elders. By the nature of their diet, the tribe as a whole were in good health and not obese. There was no such disease as Diabetes.
Historical Physical Exertion:
When in battle or play any confrontation was intense, brief and infrequent. The hand to hand weapons were fast, quick and terminal. They were masters of the projectile weapons like the bow, lance, spear, knife and blowgun. The Choctaws could kill small game with a blowgun eighty feet away.
Sports
The Choctaw created the game Lacrosse (kabocha-toli-"stickball"). They practice martial arts called "Itishi" Indian Wrestling. Another sport they excelled at was foot racing. The Choctaws could run for days if necessary.
